Stress is undoubtedly the most common kind of ailment in our generation. And contrary to what most people believe in, stress is a leading factor of many serious illnesses
Common symptoms of stress are physical and behavioral changes. Among the obvious effects of stress are the tension headaches, body pains and upset stomachs. These ailments are the immediate effects of stress and could be remedied when we find the time for relaxation. A bit of stress is good for our bodies, as we tend to be on our toes and become focus on the tasks at hand.
And fearing that stress would one day claim its effect on my health, I started a hunt for the best stress management books. And am I surprised to discover the number of stress books out in the market. A few catchy titles have caught my eye, and a number of stress topics have gathered my attention too.
Did you know that stress is considered positive when it pushes one to perform at his best? The book "The Relaxation Response" by Herbert Benson tackled this perspective on stress and introduced meditation, a mind technique, to overcome stressors.
These stressors are factors that may seem ordinary and mundane to us, but play a vital role in increasing stress levels. Among the many, money (or the lack of it) issues leads the study, conducted in a group of women between ages 25 to 50. Death of a loved one, relationship issues and work conflicts follow the lead.
Work conflicts as stressors in our lives may also include work-related concerns and employee benefits issues. A few books like "Don't Sweat the Small Stuff at Work" by Richard Carlson and "How to Keep People from Pushing Your Buttons" by Albert Ellis and Arthur Lange discuss the gravity of workplace conflicts and the effects of these situations to personal growth and workplace productivity. Additionally, the book tackles on the issue and present option in reducing stress stemming from the workplace for a healthier and happier us.
An online book I have come across, "Eliminating Stress" by Johnnie Gentle, briefly and accurately discusses in detail the totality of stress and comes up with a fool-proof plan in combating these stressors. As the author claims, these stressors can be shifted to something positive once we take charge of the stress factor. Once we are able to list and identify our stressors and come up with the description of why we are stressing over these, would help us "customize" our plan to overcome stress.
What makes this e-book effective for me is that it is:
Brief and concise - it does not take up a lot of my time, adding stress to my already stressed out daily life
Outlines the health effects of stress - makes me realize that indeed, stress levels should be controlled and maintained at an acceptable rate
Personal and Interactive - It's tone and format that allows us to internalize a number of issues allowed me to do a thorough reflection on my life
Real - It outlined and discussed very real issues that I could relate to (and a number of other people as well)
Possible - Most importantly, it discusses a possible solution to overcome these stressors.
I have learned that stress can be overcome. It is something that does not need and should not overtake our lives and invade our personal space, relationships and social growth. The key to living a relaxed life is learning to manage these stressors by not attempting to solve our issues and problems at once, but by shifting our perspectives and attitude, that yes we can. And we can do this one day at a time.
