Let's face it, the only time we really give a
second thought to our teeth is when they're hurting and we're wracked
with toothache pain. Fortunately there are a whole host of toothache
home remedies that we can use to quickly get rid of the severe pain or
to at least alleviate it to a bearable degree for a few days, until we
can get to a dentist.
It may be that using a couple of these
toothache home remedies may get rid of your toothache altogether, but
it's not enough to just treat the pain itself but to get to the main
root cause of the problem.
Toothache is one of those things that creeps up on you when you least expect it, it can really ruin your life for a few days while the pain lasts and yet it's one of the things that could most easily be avoided given just a little time and care.
The main cause of toothache pain is either sensitivity through gum loss, which is a consequence of gingivitis and periodontal disease. The more bacteria that embed themselves deep into your gum line the more they eat away at and shrink the bone mass surrounding the teeth which eventually leads to tooth loss.
As the gums pull back from the tooth it exposes more of the tooth's enamel. The tooth then becomes increasingly sensitive the closer to the root it gets so the more sensitive to hot and cold the teeth become the more gum mass is lost.
An open cavity is a major cause of toothache pain. Not only is it exposed to microbes and air but it is also vulnerable to infection.
However, there are natural toothache remedies that use ingredients you already have within your reach; in fact you will find most of them already in your kitchen pantry that you can put to immediate use for the quick relief of pain. So powerful are some of these remedies that they have proven to be very effective for centuries.
One of the best of these home remedies and certainly one of the least expensive to soothe a raging toothache is a salt water solution. Salt and water is also always immediately available wherever you go. Salt water can have an osmotic effect on your teeth, that is to say it tends to be absorbed through the surface lining, soothing the pain and removing offending bacteria from your teeth.
You can also use warm salt water then rinse your mouth afterwards with a product like Listerine Antiseptic Mouthwash. This can be an effective means of taking the pain away in minutes.
As an Aromatherapist, I have used a whole range of essential oils to alleviate many common and annoying ailments and I'd be failing if I didn't mention another natural cure for toothache, which is tea tree oil. The oil found in tea tree contains an antibacterial component and next to salt water solution, is the second best cure for tooth and gum pain.
You simply apply the oil directly to the affected teeth or gum. Or you can rinse your mouth with water and tea tree oil. It also has the advantage of being easily carried along in your pocket in case you need it. However, make sure that you use organic tea tree oil because non-organic varieties can contain high levels of toxic pesticide residues.
As mentioned there are a host of very powerful and effective home remedies for toothache, most of which are easily discovered by searching the Internet.
Thankfully there are things that you can do to prevent toothache pain arising at all. To do this you need to strengthen your teeth to withstand the constant bombardment from tooth eroding bacteria and until you do this you will always have recurring bouts of toothache pain.
